Memory Chips Spiking and Elevating Router Prices
Cost pressure in the cellular router market is already a reality!
The surge in AI demand, along with supply limits and higher raw material costs, is causing shortages and price increases for standard DRAM and Flash memory chips used in PCs, phones, mobile modems, and wireless routers.
Rising memory chip prices are causing manufacturers to shift production from standard DRAM and NAND flash, which is creating a massive supply shortage and price hikes of over 100% in 2025. More and more providers are having to respond by adjusting prices or lowering specifications.
Why Does the Price of Memory Chips Affect Routers?
Memory isn’t optional in a cellular router. Both cellular modems and router systems need a baseline amount of RAM and ROM to remain responsive and stable, and the baseline can’t be reduced without consequences.
How Memory Works Inside a Cellular Router?
In a SIM router, memory comes in two forms, each playing a very simple role. Put simply, RAM affects how smoothly a router runs day to day, while ROM affects how reliably it starts, updates, and stays stable.
RAM: The Router’s Working Space
RAM is what the router uses while it’s working. It helps the router handle live data, keep Wi-Fi connections active, move traffic smoothly, and support multiple devices simultaneously. When a router has enough RAM, it stays responsive even under heavy use. When it doesn’t, performance can slow down as activity increases.
ROM: The Router’s Long-Term Memory
What’s often called “ROM” in routers is actually Flash storage. It is where the router keeps everything it needs to start up and stay configured. This includes the firmware, network settings, and software updates. Unlike RAM, storage keeps its data even when the power is off. It’s what allows the router to boot reliably, retain its settings, and be updated over time.
More Than Memory Spikes
Memory chips aren’t the only area under pressure. At the same time, raw materials such as aluminum and copper are also becoming more expensive. They are widely used for router enclosures and thermal management. Those higher costs are reflected directly in the router’s bill of materials. The impact is often felt in more than one place. Together, these pressures influence pricing across the cellular SIM router market.
How Does OutdoorRouter Respond?
OutdoorRouter aims to offer pricing that customers can always rely on, even in a changing market. Despite rising costs across chips, modules, and materials, our prices remain unchanged at the recent stage. This isn’t because cost pressure doesn’t exist; it does!
We’ve chosen to absorb short-term increases internally, focus on supply planning, and manage sourcing carefully, rather than passing volatility directly on to customers. Thank you for choosing OutdoorRouter products. We will keep posted on the news blog if the price level have to make changes.
